SECTION ONE: Teaching Tips -
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: My students make picture /
language cards to practice vocabulary.
We use these all year in various ways - as self
quizzing, partner flash cards, go fish,
spoons, rummy, etc. We frequently allocate 10
minutes for card time and students
choose how to use them. Khalila Binns, Spanish, Lawrence, KS.
Teacher Tip #2: Reward students for media
clippings or photos of errors in grammar,
usage, and spelling. Teams can complete for
points to win a contest, daily practice,
reinforcement, fun. Shery French, LSSP
Teacher Tip #3: To help children learn their
spelling words, I have the children act out
spelling words so that they will create a picture
in their mind. This works great for the
picture thinkers. When it is time to retrieve the
word either in encoding or decoding it,
it seems to come easier. Mary Simmons, NEARI School, Holyoke, MA.
SECTION TWO: Hot Topics
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: The American Psychological Association's task force on
the "Sexualization of Girls" has released it's
report. Their report finds that
emphasis on an unattainable body image damages the health and self-image of
girls and young women, resulting in an increase
in eating disorders, anxiety and
depression. They are most concerned with the objectification of
pre-teen girls. The task force recommends stronger programs to encourage
sports participation, artistic expression and meditation which can all help to
improve girls' healthier self image. Munsy, C & Meyers, L. (2007). Monitor
on Psychology, Vol 38(9), 58-59.
HOT TOPIC # 2: College counseling centers may
want to join others in offering a
"National Depression Screening Day". Results
from last year's screening on Oct 11th
showed a large increase in the number of students
who came to counseling centers for
screening and those who were detected showed
greater improvement with treatment. The
day also was effective with attracting more males
for depression screening than normal.
Chamberlin, J. (2007). Monitor on Psychology, Vol 38(9), 68.

***********New Layered Curriculum® Units ***********
Tom Benton from Davison, Michigan sent LOTS (about 18) units for
high school Business, Economics, and Marketing. Thanks so much Tom!!!!
You can view all the sample unit plans online at:
http://help4teachers.com
**********New Books, New Products********
The new 2nd edition of the Layered Curriculum® WORKBOOK is available online
at a discounted price. We also have several new book bundles including one
for struggling readers. The new book by David Sousa, "How the Brain Learns
Mathematics"is also available. View all my recommended books at:

** New Product: SAD Lights****
We now carry full spectrum light devices for your home, classroom
or office. As days get shorter, many people, especially children, benefit
from exposure to full spectrum lighting to help ward off seasonal
depression. As I covered earlier, the research
seems to indicate that exposure
to full spectrum lighting is just as effective in
treating seasonal depression as
pharmaceutical interventions! http://brains.org/store/index

SECTION FOUR: Kathie's Email
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kathie, I'm trying Layered Curriculum in my classroom this year, but
my school requires that we enter a daily grade on the website for
parents and students and I'm not sure how to do this when different
assignments are worth different points. - Marty B., AL
==============================
Marty,
There are a lot of ways to handle grading with Layered Curriculum®.
If you need to do a daily grade, and you're using a "Daily Method" of
Layered Curriculum®, simply have all your daily assignments worth the
same number of points - have the students turn them in each day and
enter those. If you're using a more traditional format and have different
point assignments, divide the total number of points by the days you've
allotted and use that as your daily total. For example if you have 100
points for a 5 day unit, that's 20 points/day. You may have some students
who collect them at different frequency and through different assignments,
but at the end of the 5 days, the final grade
will be from the 100 points anyway.
So, just enter the total points the students earned that day even if it was
from more than one assignment.
Best, Kathie
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My it's been a busy, busy month. I've been out on the road for awhile
and will still not be back in the office for a
few days but I wanted to get a mid October

week starting on Monday in Decatur,
Illinois with the secondary teachers in that
region then with all the Instructional Specialists
from the Toronto District School Board just this past Wednesday.
We've got new workshops in the making for New Mexico, North Carolina, Michigan
and Ontario. As dates and locations get
confirmed, I will post that information on
my calendar at: http://help4teachers.com
As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
