--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER TIP #1:  When asking questions & a child gets stuck, give them
the option to "phone a friend". Staff, Cedarwood Preparatory School, S. Africa.
TEACHER TIP # 2: When teaching a 45 minute class, it works well to do
the 3-15 method. Lecture for fifteen minutes than transition to a 15 minute
 discussion, transition to a fifteen minute demonstration. I find this keeps
kids focused. Sal Buchetto (via email)
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1:While bilingual children tend to have lower math scores
when entering school, by 5th grade they are caught up to their native-English
-speaking peers. However due to a variety of factors, non-English dominant
Bilingual students and non English speaking students continue to score
lower on reading and math assessments. Wen-Jui, H. (2012). "Bilingualism
and Academic Achievement". Child Development, Vol 83(1), 300-321.
HOT TOPIC #2: Young adolescents who have trouble sustaining attention
 are more likely to begin smoking at an early age. However the researchers
 caution there are significant other factors which influence adolescents to
begin and continue smoking. Harakeh, Z. et al. (2012). "The Association
Between Neurocognitive Functioning and Smoking in Adolescence: The
TRAILS Study." Neuropsychology, Jul 9, preview, nps.
------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr Nunley:
I like a lot of the sample lesson plans that are on your website, but where do you
find all of the corresponding information to run the plans?
Mr. Turcotte

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Mr Turcotte,
You have brought up a common misconception about the sample units at
the website.  I try to always caution teachers not to use those units "as is" because
they were designed by a different teacher, with a population that may be very
different from your own, and using a curriculum very different from yours as well.
The units at the website are there to use as EXAMPLES in making your own units.
Of course, you may find some of the assignments useful the way they are, but
you want to add your own ideas, materials, and modifications to fit your specific
teaching environment.
All the Best, Kathie
------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
August!!  Oh my, how did August get here so fast?  My summer has flown.
You can see how behind I am in that I'm getting this "early August" newsletter
out to you on the 16th.  The month started with the annual APA convention, this
year in Orlando.  I tweeted a few of the highlights and I'm working on writing
up some of this year's research to offer you over the next few months.

I've also been to Bryson City, North Carolina and just returned from Vestavia Hills
Alabama - both terrific Layered Curriculum® workshops with great staff.  Thanks!

This next week, I'm returning to Millersburg, Ohio for a follow-up Layered Curriculum®
presentation with their teachers again and then up to Bay City Academy in Michigan.

This month celebrates 15 years of this newsletter.  One of my goals for this fall
is to offer a video version of the newsletter in addition to this print version.  The
video version would include elaboration on Hot Topics, Layered Curriculum®
lessons, and Teaching Tips.  If all goes well, it will be offered starting in September.

I do have 2 more workshop slots open on the fall 2012 calendar - one in October
and one in November.  If you are interested in having your school or location
host a Layered Curriculum® workshop during this upcoming school year, just
send me an email.

As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
