--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: When we are checking answers for multiple choice
questions, I have my students"show" me their answer using a list I write
on the board such as: A = sit ups, B= jumping jacks C = Pushups,
D= squat jumps. So if the answer is B, then the students will do jumping
jacks. Tracy Lomax, Western Reserve Elementary, Collins, OH.
Teacher Tip # 2: Play test review games with fly swatters. Have the
students either hit the correct answer on the board or use it as a way
to see who gets to answer the questions. Leslie Benton, Bellevue City, OH.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Children who are bilingual appear to have better executive
processing skills, stronger problem solving skills and are faster at switching
between mental tasks. Bialystok, Ellen. (2010). "Global-local and trail-making
tasks by monolingual and bilingual children: Beyond inhibition".
Developmental Psychology, Vol 46(1), 93-105

HOT TOPIC #2: Some people acquire partial aphasia due to head trauma or
other neurological damage. This partial aphasia results in their inability to
speak certain grammatical categories, such as nouns, or verbs, or certain
tenses of verbs. Interestingly, when this event happens with persons who
are bilingual, they lose the ability to speak in both languages. Hence we
can now see some overlap in lexicon grouping in persons who are bilingual.
Miozzo, M.; Costa, A.; Hernández, M; Rapp, B. (2010). Lexical processing
in the bilingual brain: Evidence from grammatical/morphological deficits.
Aphasiology, Vol 24(2), 262-287

------SECTION FOUR: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy June everyone! I know many of you have already packed up
your classrooms and headed out for a restful and reinvigorating summer
holiday. But, I did want to drop you a line to let you know about some of
the new things in the works here over the summer.
First, I've had a great month visiting both Chicago and New York City. I
want to thank the teachers at Lake Forest Academy and the New York
City Department of Ed - English Language Learners, for hosting some
terrific events. I'm looking forward to one more trip back to NYC next
week to help the teachers there with Layered Curriculum.
Secondly, there are several new workshops in the making and I'm posting
them on the website as soon as we get things confirmed. Right now, new
things are in the making for Louisiana, Michigan, Ontario, and Japan.
Watch the calendar page for details.
We are still working our Uganda project. If you can commit to helping
us with this project using your students next fall, please let me know. We
still need a lot more teachers / classes to volunteer. You can read about
this exciting cross-cultural opportunity at: http://help4teachers.com/uganda.htm
My fall workshop calendar is just about filled, but I do still have one new opening
in August, two in September, and one in December. My spring 2011 calendar
is now open as well. If you are looking to host a workshop at your school or
district in the next school year, please send me an email or visit:
http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm
Happy Summer!
As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
