--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER TIP #1:  Post examples of work in the classroom for things
such as APA style, Formal Letter, Essay, etc. Wendy Jo H., King Academy.
TEACHER TIP # 2: In my middle school classroom, each student has
a 3-ring binder of their work, which is kept on the bookshelf (one shelf for
each period).  As the students come in, they take their binder. It helps in
taking attendance as missing student's notebooks are still on the shelf.
We have the class helper put handouts in the notebooks for absent
students.  Workshop participant, Minnesota.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: A mind shift is taking place which views autism not as
a deficit needing a cure, but simply a different but valid pathway within
human diversity. This "neurodiversity movement" challenges the traditional
medical model which sees autism as a separate entity from the person
and something needing a cure
Kapp, S. et al. (2012, Apr 30). "Deficit, Difference, or Both? Autism and
Neurodiversity." Developmental Psychology, preview, nps.
HOT TOPIC #2:  Sexual harassment in early adolescence can lead to eating
disorders during teenage years. Researchers tracked 5th grade students
through 9th grade and found that those who experienced sexual harassment,
tended to try to modify their own body image and were more likely to have
eating disorders by 9th grade. Girls were more susceptible than boys.
Petersen, J. (2012, Apr 30). "Peer Sexual Harassment and Disordered
Eating in Early Adolescence." Developmental Psychology, preview, nps.
------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Doctor Kathie Nunley,
Thank you for supporting Springs Alive community school  [Kakiri, Uganda]
by standing with us in a very difficult situation. Surely you are a real friend.
I did receive the money and we have steadily embarked on what the Kakiri town
council Authority wanted of us.  The pit-latrine has been completed though
we still remain with outstanding debts.  Also see attached picture of the
former pit-latrine and pictures of the new one, we have also built a pillar
along the wall that had collapsed to strengthen the wall.  The school was
able to open for the children to attend the new school year.
Thank u !!
Martin Sebuliba Victor
Chairman Springs Alive

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Martin,
Thank you for the update and photos.  I posted them at the website
http://brains.org/uganda
so that the teachers and students who donated to help you rebuild can see
what all you have done.  Please stay in touch and we will continue to
help support as much as we can.  - Kathie

------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
June is an interesting time of year for us in education.  My friends and
colleagues here in North America are finishing up the school year, (or have
recently done so and are now on summer holiday).  My friends and
colleagues in the southern hemisphere are just embarking on a new
school year.  Best wishes to all, whether you are beginning or ending
your year!
I'm leaving this week for a 2-week workshop tour in the southern region of
Africa.  First stop - Windhoek, Namibia.  Then it's on to the Herzlia School in
Cape Town and then Gaborone, Botswana for an international conference
on Inclusion.  After that, I'll return to South Africa for 2 days of Layered Curriculum®
workshops in Johannesburg and finish with a workshop in Grahamstown.
Stay tuned to Twitter and FB as I keep you posted on what will undoubtedly be a
fantastic tour.
I do have new workshops on the fall 2012 calendar and a few now blooming
for spring 2013.    http://help4teachers.com/calendar.htm
If you are interested in having your school or location host a Layered Curriculum®
workshop during this upcoming school year, just send me an email.
As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
