--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: I play music in class during transition periods or at the
beginning as they arrive. The students write down suggestions for
desired songs. No name, workshop participant, ON.
Teacher Tip #2: Keep a small band-aid / first aid kit in your classroom.
Jane Fontes, Malvern C. I., Toronto
Teacher Tip # 3: I use note cards to call on kids at random (write one name
on each card, shuffle). V. Bryan, Nampa High, ID.
Send your favorite teaching tip to me at Kathie@brains.org
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: According to Dr Rodney Hammond, director of the
Division of Violence Prevention at the CDC, youth violence is now
considered a public health issue as the CDC believes it is preventable.
Homicide / suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in the US for
persons aged 15 - 35 (20,000 annual deaths). Rates are not stable
through US history, but rather run in peaks and valleys. While our
last "peak" period was in the mid 1990's, it was still lower than our
highest peak in the 1920s. "Violence Prevention: What Can We
Assume from a Public Health Perspective?" Address delivered
August 15, 2008, Boston, MA: APA National Convention.

HOT TOPIC #2: Treatments and school intervention for persons with
autism has changed dramatically in the last 2 decades, primarily
because psychologists have broadened the criteria for diagnosis. Two
decades ago, 80% of persons with an autism diagnosis were classified
with mental retardation. Today less than 50% carry that classification.
Two decades ago, more than half of persons with autism had severe
language delays or no language. Today only 15 - 20% of persons with
autism have that level of language impairment. (some of this is due to
a widening of the Autism spectrum, some due to early intervention
allowing children various routes to communication which later lead
to speech). "Current Issues in Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum
Disorders: New Measures and Methodology." A presentation by Catherine
Lord, PhD, August 15, 2008, Boston, MA: APA National Convention.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kathie, I just heard about DI through an in-service we had at our school.
The teachers had seen you at the Vegas Conference and passed on the
wonderful information to the rest of us. I am very excited about try to teach
this way for my 2nd year of 9th grade biology. I don’t have any lesson
plans for DI to use in biology and I was wondering if you could share from
your teaching experiences. (Lesson Plans, Labs, Etc.) We did get a
handout about a Layered Curriculum Sample Unit that they got from the
conference. Basically, I am looking for more things like that. I would also
like to see what kind of rubrics you use with these units. Thank you very
much. Hopefully I will get the chance to see you speak at a future conference.
Trevor E., Cape Coral High School
Greetings to everyone from the annual APA (American Psychological Association)
national convention! This year, we're in Boston. If you've been getting this
newsletter for awhile, you know that I LOVE this annual"get - together" where
I can meet and listen to a my colleagues sharing the latest research in all fields
of psychology. This year there are about 16,000 of us in attendance and so far
the sessions have been wonderful. I'll be sharing this research with you over
the next several newsletter issues. Today's "Hot Topics" are from a couple
of Friday sessions I attended. More will be coming in the months ahead - I took
lots of notes!
As you read this though, I'll be leaving the conference to head to Texas where
I have Layered Curriculum workshops this week in both Keller and San Angelo.
After that, it's off to Minnesota. Thank you Lehi, UT and Kuna, ID for your warm
and wonderful hospitality last week.
If you are looking to join us at a workshop, please visit my calendar page
to see when I'll be in your area. Registration information and links are
If you are looking to schedule a workshop for your school or district, just
send me an email. My spring / fall 2009 calendar is now open.
