--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER TIP # 1: Start class with student "good news". This gets
them talking and shows interest in their on-goings. (can be an oral
or written activity). Keri Lauxman, Lawrence, KS.
TEACHER TIP # 2: Hot glue posters to walls - they stay up and the
glue won't take off the paint on your walls. no name, workshop
participant, KS.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: New research on bullying coming out this month. This
time researchers looked at ways students respond to being bullying by their
peers. They collected observations on over 4000 middle and high school
students who were victimized by bullying. They found responses could be
categorized into 4 groups: passive, active (support seeking), aggressive and
undifferentiated. Each group had its own unique internal and external symptoms.
The children in the undifferentiated group were the most likely to experience
social-emotional problems. Waasdorp, T & Bradshaw, C. (2011). "Examining
student responses to frequent bullying: A laten class approach." Journal of
Educational Psychology. (Mar 28 - upcoming issue)
HOT TOPIC #2: I am frequently asked for research supporting the relationship
between physical fitness and cognitive function. For those of you keen on that
research, you may want to look at a new study coming out this month that
compared cognitive variability and aerobic fitness in preadolescent children.
The researchers found that children who were more physically fit performed
better on some cognitive tasks, particularly those that varied cognitive control
demands. Wu, C. et al. (2011). Aerobic fitness and response variability in
preadolescent children performing a cognitive control task. Neuropsychology,
Mar 28 issue.

-----SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Kathie, Can you provide an example of what the "daily method" of LC
would look like? Love your ideas and website.
Thanks, Pauline
===========================================
Pauline,
Daily Method Layered Curriculum® units are highly structured. You offer
students one or two objectives each day and "walk them through" the C layer,
then everyone does a B layer together and an A layer together. You can
get an idea of how to put this together by watching the downloadable tutorial
on the front page of the website: http://help4teachers.com
(look for the link in the section "What goes in a layer?") or you can see specific
examples of daily method vs traditional in the Layered Curriculum® Workbook.
------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I just returned this week from the SAALED Inclusion conference in
Cape Town, South Africa. What an amazing country!! I had a fantastic
time and enjoyed listening to the other international presenters as well
as meeting the teachers from a variety of school in South Africa and other
African nations. I had a couple of days to just relax and enjoy the gorgeous
scenery as well. Another highlight was I saw my first penguins (outside of
a zoo) - funny little creatures running about the rocky shores. I hope to
have a chance to return to that beautiful nation again soon.
Next week I'll be heading back up north to work with teachers in Ontario
Canada again. We have new workshops and conferences posted on the
website.
I'm scheduling now for fall 2011 workshops. If you need a workshop hosted
at your school or district, just send me an email.
As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
