--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: Have students write one concept learned on a post-it note,
then stick it to wherever they line up or on a locker. Other students can now
read it over and over. Deb Hersek, Nordonia Schools, Ohio.
Teacher Tip # 2: Have students highlight their name on all their papers before
turning them in. Then they're sure to not forget. Martha Lambert, Clyde, OH.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: For those of you working with struggling readers at the
middle school level - you will want to take a look at the research out this month
on the program Learning Strategies Curriculum (LSC), which targets adolescents
needing reading intervention. Daily instruction in LSC strategies made a significant
difference for struggling readers in grades 6, 7,and 8. When used in grade 9, there
was no difference at the end of the year for treatment versus control groups.
Cantrell, S. et al. (2010). The impact of a strategy-based intervention on the
comprehension and strategy use of struggling adolescent readers Journal of
Educational Psychology, Vol 102(2), 257-280.

HOT TOPIC #2: The research in recent years on the process of teaching
fractions in math has had conflicting advice. Some research indicates that
children should learn the conceptual process before procedural process and
some has indicated exactly the opposite. There have also been studies
indicating students develop both simultaneously. Well, researchers in Canada
and England now propose that the conflict is the result of variation in children.
Their new study looked at grade 4 and 5 students and how they learned
fractions. They identified 5 distinct clusters in which children draw on
conceptual and procedural knowledge. Children who rely on conceptual
knowledge seem to have an advantage over children who rely more heavily
on procedural knowledge.
Hallett, D.; Nunes, T.; Bryant, P. (2010). Individual differences in
conceptual and procedural knowledge when learning fractions. Journal
of Educational Psychology, Vol 102(2), May 2010, 395-406.

------SECTION FOUR: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's August - time to wake up! The new school year is getting underway
for most of us within the next couple of weeks.
I hope you all had a pleasant and rejuvenating summer holiday. I know
I certainly enjoyed my down time in July. But now, it's back-to-work.
I'll start my August off as I always do by attending the annual American
Psychological Association national conference. This year, we're in
San Diego. This is my opportunity to see what the hottest new research
is coming out of the neuro-psych and educational psychology fields.
I'll have lots to tell you about starting with the mid-August newsletter.
I also have trips this month to St. George's Episcopal School in New
Orleans, Lake Forest Country Day School just north of Chicago,
and Plainwell High School in Michigan. I'll finish out with a return
trip to Bermuda High School For Girls in early September.
I look forward to meeting many of you along the way.
If you are considering a "Differentiating with Layered Curriculum®" workshop
at your school or education center in the upcoming school year, my
spring and summer 2011 calendar is now open. Just send me an email.
As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
