--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: I bought 2 colored Ping Pong paddles at the dollar store.
Red side means no, green side means yes. Each child has one when I ask
review questions and they flash the appropriate color at me. I can assess
quickly who know what and who delays to see what others do. Very fun and
effective. Darlene Rempel, Newell Christian School, Brooks, AB.
Teacher Tip # 2: Use painters tape to section off your whiteboard. It's
great for graphing in math. No name, workshop participant, Eagle Mtn., TX.
Send your favorite teaching tip to me at Kathie@brains.org
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Students with dyslexia understand the semantics (meaning)
of a word, but struggle with phonological deficits. This is the conclusion of
new research that used Tip-of-the-tongue responses on a picture naming task
with upper elementary aged children with and without dyslexia. Children with
dyslexia made more TOT errors in the phonological portion of word retrieval
but not the semantic portion. The results indicated that dyslexia is a text-
independent phonological processing deficit. Hanly, S. & Vandenberg, B.
(2010). Journal of Learning Disabilities. Vol 43(1), 15-23.

HOT TOPIC #2: In a related study, new research shows that the phonological
processing weakness found with dyslexia also gives children an uneven profile
of mathematical skills. Math impairments are seen in children and adolescents
with dyslexia in terms of slower and less accurate number fact recall, and slower
counting. They do not seem to show impairment in place value understanding.
Because of their difficulty recalling arithmetic facts, mental math activities and
assessments can cause them significant disadvantage. Simmons, F. &
Singleton, C. (2009). Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs. Vol 9(3),
154-163.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL (Special principalship opening)-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kathie - We are actively seeking a principal for our school who is dedicated
to student-centered leadership. As an active member of the Coalition of Essential
Schools, Souhegan High School is looking for a strong leader who embraces our
student-centered principals and guiding documents. As a leader in the field of
school reform, student-centered programs and differentiated inclusive curriculum,
we would very much appreciate you notifying your colleagues of this unique
and challenging open position in southern New Hampshire.
Thanks, Carrie Wildes Morneau, Director of Human Resources, Amherst, NH
=============================
Carrie (and readers):
While I have never listed employment opportunities in my newsletter, I will
list this one as it comes from my own community's high school. It is a great
opportunity for someone seeking an administrative position in a national known
CES high school. There are very few truly student-centered public schools
in this country - so it's an amazing opportunity for the right person. - Kathie
------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy March everyone. I know this is a bit early, but wanted to get the
March issue out this week while we are off school here in the New Hampshire
for our "winter break" (New England, unlike most U.S. schools, takes 2 spring
semester breaks - one in February and one in April). I also wanted to post
the employment opportunity above before the March 3 cut-off. (Email me if
you are interested, but pressed to make the deadline and I'll see what I can do).

Another reason to get this out early is that I'll be heading out on the road
shortly for Layered Curriculum® workshops in Seville, Ohio and Toronto,
Ontario. The Seville (Lodi) workshop on March 8th is open to outside
participants if anyone wants to attend. The registration contact is on the
calendar page: http://help4teachers.com/calendar.htm

I'm now starting to plan for my "back-to-school" month of August. It's a
busy time for professional development days, so if you'd like me to hold
an August date for you, please let me know as soon as you have your calendar
dates scheduled. I also have one more opening for this school year, in the
month of June. Email me for more information or visit:
http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm

As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
