--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: I write antonyms (hot/cold) on milk jug lids. When
I need to assign partners for a math game, I hand them out and the
students quietly find their match. (I found this idea in Mailbox magazine.)
Ryan Alston, Cardston Elem, Alberta.
Teacher Tip # 2: For reluctant, or poor readers - have a cloth book bag
hung on the back of their desk chair filled with appropriate leveled books.
During quiet reading time instead of getting up and down going for a new
book they can't read, they go to the book bag and find an interesting book
they can read. Rhoda Trehearne, Lethbridge, Alberta.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: If you are using the online program MoodGYM you may be
interested in new research out of Australia. The program is an online,
self-directed cognitive–behavioral therapy program aimed at reducing
anxiety and depression in adolescents. Comparing nearly 1500 adolescents
using the program vs those who were wait-listed, the researchers found that
the program was effective in reducing anxiety even through a 6-month follow-up.
However it was not very effective in reducing depression, although male participants
had a slight reduction in depression. Calear, A.; et al. (2009). The YouthMood Project:
A cluster randomized controlled trial of an online cognitive behavioral program with
adolescents. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology. Vol 77(6), 1021-1032.
HOT TOPIC #2: Children who survive cancer may face more neurocognitive challenges
than their peers as they grow. In long term studies, children recovered from cancer
have problems in memory, organization and emotion. The greatest problems were
reported in those children who had radiation to their brains or who had tumors in
the cortex region (as opposed to lower brain regions). The study suggests that our
schools may want to help better prepare cancer survivors for cognitive challenges in
adulthood. Ellenberg, L. et al. (2009). Neurocognitive status in long-term survivors of
childhood CNS malignancies: A report from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.
Neuropsychology, Vol 23(6), 705-717.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning, Dr. Nunley,
I am writing to thank you for the most interesting and thought-provoking
professional development session I have ever attended. Not only was it
interesting from a teacher's standpoint, but I was thinking about my own
children. What an engrossing lecturer you are.
I also had a question answered that I have been wondering about for years.
As a flautist in an orchestra here in the city, I had always wondered why
I was so exhausted after a concert. Even the day after a concert makes
me feel like I've been hit by a bus.....but now I know! Gosh, after almost
thirty years of playing the flute, I haven't actually mastered the music!
We get new music to play every six weeks or so as we finish each concert.
So it is never at the stage where it would be at a mastery level. I guess
the act of concentrating on the music for two hours burns a lot of energy.
Now I know!
Thank you so much for sharing your time and expertise with us. It was
engaging and lots of fun. And I so agree with you about the arts, but I'm
kind of biased on that score. Have a happy holiday.
Sincerely, Christine Fong, Music Teacher L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute
Well, here we are with one more HAPPY NEW YEAR. And can it really be
2010? The decade flew by. I'm writing you today from sunny, snow-filled
New England, where I'm crawling out of the Holiday Mania Maze and trying
to get my bearings again back in the real world. I promise those of you
following me on Twitter and Facebook, that I'll get tips going again soon!
I've got a few January projects going since it's not a travel month for me.
So, we'll work on some new YouTube videos - feel free to send along topics
or questions you'd like addressed in the videos. I'm also working on a
new Trainer's Training program for Layered Curriculum®. I know lots of you
are waiting for another training session. And, I want to get my Uganda
Who-ville project back up and running - it got inadvertently put on the back
burner in the fall.
We have new Layered Curriculum® workshops in the making for Spring and
Fall of this year. If you want to join us, check out the details on the calendar page:
http://help4teachers.com/
If you are interested in hosting a workshop at your school, visit:
