--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: When teaching w/ lab tables (or group tables): Use a
laminated folder with the table number to have students turn in work. Pass
work back out with the folder too. Tammy McCown, Prairie Vista Middle,
Ft. Worth, TX.
Teacher Tip # 2: Use a hanging clothes rack as a chart hanger. (You can
find them at Walmart / Target for about $15). No name, Eagle Mt. Saginaw
School, TX.
Send your favorite teaching tip to me at Kathie@brains.org
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Teen suicide among American Indians is three times
the national average. If you look at American Indians in remote regions
the picture is worse - ten times the national average! In fact, the Sioux
Indian Reservation in South Dakota has the highest suicide rate in the
world. Fortunately this has caught the attention of native and non-native
mental health professionals. They have teamed up to blend both traditional
Native spiritual teachings with modern psychological practice to try to address
the poverty, isolation and years of oppressive conditions which all lead to
the high incidence of depression in these areas. DeAngelis, T. (2009).
"Natural Healing" Monitor on Psychology, Vol 40(10), pag 48 - 50.

HOT TOPIC #2: Watching someone else get tutored in a subject may be
a very effective way to learn concepts. New research from the University of
Pittsburgh divided Physics students into 3 groups. One watched videos of
an expert tutoring session, one watched experts actually solving problems,
and one watched a team solve problems. In long-term retention and transfer
measures, the group that watched the tutoring session did much better.
Craig, S, Chi, M; VanLehn, K. (2009). Improving Classroom Learning by
Collaboratively Observing Human Tutoring Videos While Problem Solving.
Journal of Educational Psychology, Vol 101(4), 779-789.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here's an email I received via our Facebook page this week
http://facebook.com/layered.curriculum
Anne L asks: I am interested in starting Layered Curriculum® but have some
questions. For example if a student does B work on level C and B and then
goes on to level A and does A work how is the grade reconciled?
My response: Anne - You'll want to devise a "point system" for the whole unit. Then
allow "x" number of points for each layer. For example, make the whole unit worth
100 points. You may want to allocate say, 50 points for the C layer, 25 points for the
B layer and 25 for the A layer (or whatever works for your grade level and subject). Now
design rubrics or criteria to grade all the assignments and then sum the points for all
layers to get their unit grade. For more details, take a look at the Layered Curriculum® text.
------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy NOVEMBER. My favorite month! I don't know why, but November
is my fav. Maybe it's the combination of autumn colors, autumn weather,
Thanksgiving decorations, a lull after the harvest and before the December
holiday storms through. I find it a very relaxing time.

I had a terrific time with the teachers in Allegan, Michigan last week. I've been
out to the Allegan area several times now and and am always warmly welcomed.
I also made my first visit to Lakeshore Collegiate in Toronto last week. I'll be
returning in December to help them finish their Layered Curriculum® training.

Later this month, I'll be heading back to Lethbridge, Alberta for two days of
Layered Curriculum® training with both elementary and high school. Those
workshops are open to outside participants, if you'd like to join us.

There are new workshops in the making for Idaho, Ohio, Louisiana, and Ontario.
If you are interested in joining us at a workshop, check out my calendar for dates,
locations and registration contact information http://help4teachers.com/calendar.htm

If you are looking for a Layered Curriculum® workshop to be conducted at your
school next year, I have three slots still open on my Spring 2010 calendar
and my Summer and Fall 2010 calendars are now open. You can get
information at: http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm or email me for an electronic
brochure.

As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
