--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: Keep a student table full of supplies they need - Kleenex,
stapler, hole puncher, hand sanitizer, etc. Students don't have to bother
you for these items during teaching time.
Vickie Harris & Kathy Payne, Enis ISD, TX.
Teacher Tip # 2: For young students, issue their progress report or report
card using a color system. Using Green, Red & Yellow, color in a bar under
each subject. Springs Alive School, Uganda.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Children with Developmental Disabilities (DD) can exhibit
a variety of behavior problem when they start school which can hamper their
success. Researchers have found that many of these behavior problems are
predicted by the number of stressful events experienced within the child's
family during those few preschool years. Early intervention education
programs need to also address how to create a positive climate for the
families. Mitchell, D. & Hauser-Cram, P. (2009). Early predictors of behavior
problems: Two years after early intervention. "Journal of Early Intervention".
Vol 32(1), 3-16.

HOT TOPIC #2: Middle school students who engage in physical activity, can
increase their overall feelings of self-efficacy. In a new study, researchers
outfitted 6th grade girls with accelerometers which measured their physical
activity over the course of a couple of years. By 8th grade, self-efficacy and
perceived social support were both positively correlated with physical activity.
Dishman, R., et al. (2010). Social-cognitive correlates of physical activity
in a multi-ethnic cohort of middle-school girls: Two-year prospective study.
Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Vol 35(2), 188-198.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL -----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Kathie-
I am a HUGE fan of differentiation! I started studying it in during my graduate
course work and over the past few years have applied it in its entirety to
my 8th, 9th, and 10th grade science classes. At first my students and
their parents were apprehensive, but now they LOVE IT. Our school
gets some many great comments about the "differentiated science
classes." I owe it all to you- so a HUGE Thank you :)
Jamie Brunmeier, Maine
=============================
Jamie, Thanks for sharing your excitement and thanks also for the Layered
Curriculum units you sent. We'll get those posted as soon as we can. Keep in touch!
Kathie
------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello - I've returned from my great adventure in Uganda and am so excited
to share what we did, what we saw and what plans we have to continue to
help the Springs Alive school. We ended up with over 200 pounds of school
supplies which we took packed in our luggage. I've updated the website page
with some photos from our day: http://help4teachers.com/uganda.htm

And also a plea to teachers out there to help us keep this school moving. Due
to irregular attendance (If you saw the village area, you would understand why many
children are unable to come some days) and the instability of a trained teacher
supply, we need to help them set-up a student-centered learning environment.
I need help from all of you - curriculum planners and teachers to help us get a
list of basic skills and activities that can be used by the students to learn those skills.
Email me (or reply to this newsletter) if you and your students can get involved with this
project.

In other news, I'll be heading back to Canada a couple of times this month to
continue Layered Curriculum® training with the Toronto District. June will
be New York City month, with 3 trips down there starting with a keynote at the
city-wide parents conference and continued work with ELL teachers. I also have
a trip to Chicago in June.

I still have some openings in my August workshop calendar as well as one in September
and one opening in December. If you are looking to schedule a workshop for the next
school year, please send me an email or visit: http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm

As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
