--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: Don’t wash your old chalkboard - use “Puffs Plus" after
erasing to remove chalk dust. E McCowan, OH
Teacher Tip # 2: Use Red / Green Cards. These help kids stop and think
about an answer and give extra time to everyone. When the red card is
up, they are instructed to think about the task, but they can’t answer or
respond until the green side is shown. No name, workshop participant, OH.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: *Sleep deprived brains do 40% worse on encoding new
information. Memory networks fail under sleep deprivation. The hippocampus
simply cannot lay down any new information.
Matthew Walker, PhD. UC Berkeley. “To Sleep, Perchance to Remodel the
Brain and Improve Memory”. August 13, 2010. APA Annual convention,
San Diego, CA
HOT TOPIC #2: *Motor skills improve 35% after sleep. The last 2 hours of our
sleep is most critical for consolidation and yet is the piece most often cut short.
Sleep physically changes the geography of memories. After sleep, the location
in the brain of our learning has actually moved. Matthew Walker, PhD. UC Berkeley.
“To Sleep, Perchance to Remodel the Brain and Improve Memory”. August 13, 2010.

-----SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dr. Nunley, I am reviewing the Layered Curriculum book and on page 20 it
references a "vocabulary string board." I'm not sure what that is. Can you elaborate?
I am writing my lessons for the year and working on expanding my use of
Layered Curriculum. I am still new to the process and having issues with
students who are satisified with stopping at the "C" layer. Any ideas, thoughts
or suggestions you have will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Suzie J.
==============================
Suzie,
We make string boards out of cut file folders. (or large index cards). Voc
words go on the right side, definitions random on the left side. There's a
long string on the corner and you wrap it from the word to the correct definition.
On the back is the "Key" (drawn lines to show how the string lines up if correct).
If you have trouble with students stopping at the C layer....make sure you
start with a daily method. (You move all the students through the layers together).
There is information in the book and I think there's a video on that topic on our
YouTube Channel. Good luck, Kathie
Happy New Year!! Only teachers get to celebrate New Years in September
as well as January. I think most of us have by now, made our way back
to school and are feeling comfortable with the new routine.
August was, as usual, an exceptional month for me. It always begins with
our annual American Psychological Association conference. You will be
reading and hearing about the new research presented there over the next
several months. My current podcast is dedicated to a good deal of the new
research on sleep: http://brains.org/podcast1.mp3
I want to thank the teachers at Plainwell High School in Michigan and the teachers
in Bermuda for their warm hospitality. I look forward to seeing some new
Layered Curriculum® units from both Michigan and Bermuda in the next few
months.
If you are looking to attend a Layered Curriculum® presentation,
I have several new workshops & conferences scheduled for the 2010 - 2011
school year. As things are formalized, information is posted online at:
http://help4teachers.com/
at your school or education center in the upcoming school year, my
spring and summer 2011 calendar is now open. Just send me an email.
As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
