--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1 & 2: Kids have laminated name cards on their desk. They
put them on the teacher's desk when they need 1-1 attention. The teacher
can call them up in the order they appear on the desk. These same name
cards can be hung on a hook at the board when the child "checks out" to
the bathroom. No asking is needed. No name, workshop participant,
The Study School, Montreal, QC.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Students during early adolescence often struggle
academically due to help avoidance and diminished interaction with
the classroom teachers. Help avoidance varies for both gender and race.
A recent study compared boys and girls of European American and African
American race. All groups increased in help avoidance as they transitioned
to middle school. European American girls were less likely to avoid help than
E. A. boys. Researchers found no difference in help avoidance between
genders of African American students. Ryan, A. et al. (2009)

------SECTION FOUR: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy Summer. I know most of you are relaxing and trying to spend some
quality "down time" with friends and family. I did want to get a short
mid-summer newsletter out to you though, just to say hello and keep you
posted on what we're doing.
As mentioned above, I've started a weekly video blog on You Tube and will
post tips and suggestions as well as video of teachers and schools using
Layered Curriculum as I travel around North America.
In early August, I will be making my annual trip to the national American
Psychological Association Conference. This year's conference will be
held in Toronto. I look forward to hearing the cutting edge educational
and neurological psychology research and as always, I will pass it along to
you via this newsletter over the fall issues. I'll post some in the You Tube
vlog as well.
