--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: Once a week require (or provide class time for) a
tutorial. These are small group study session similar to college where
students discuss what was covered in the lecture using their notes.
Students can select their own groups - you may or may not assign a
monitor. Paul Yanchus, HS., Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, Canada.
Teacher Tip # 2: Provide small cubbies in the faculty bathroom - one for
each teacher. Here teachers can leave personal and grooming materials.
- seen at Samuel Hearne Secondary, Inuvik, NWT.
Send your favorite teaching tip to me at Kathie@brains.org
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Marijuana use among African American males has been
linked to poor relationships, conduct problems and problems lingering into
adulthood. Data collected regarding African American males who have been
suspended or expelled from school indicate that only 7% of non-users fall into
this category, whereas 23% of users are among those who have been suspended
or expelled. Dr April Harris-Britt, "Pathways to Chronic Substance Use for African
American Adolescent Males". APA conference, August 8, 2009 Toronto.

HOT TOPIC #2: African American girls report less substance use than other
girl counterparts. Positive youth development including "the 5 C's" - competence,
confidence, connections, character, caring have been successful in reducing
substance use with this population. The most significant factor is a good
relationship with their father, though having an available mentor and positive
school climate were also associated with less substance use in girls.
Shauna Cooper, PhD. "Positive Youth Development Among African American
Girls: Implications for Prevention". APA conference, August 8, 2009 Toronto

------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy October everyone! If you're following me on Twitter or Facebook,
you know it's been an exciting 2 weeks for me, so I think I'm looking
forward to settling in front of the fire for awhile and watching the leaves turn.
If you haven't been following me - here's a quick summary:
I started out in late September with a trip to Yankton, South Dakota. We had
a great morning with all the teachers from Yankton School District.
From there, it was a trip WAY up north - in fact I went 124 miles north of the
Arctic Circle to the town of Inuvik. (If you watch the show "Ice Road Truckers",
you know Inuvik). It's a fascinating area where a sizable number of residents
still speak their native tongue of Gwitch'in. I spent two days there working with
the teachers from throughout the Beaufort Delta Education Region on Layered
Curriculum®. I've got photos posted on the Facebook page of interesting
highlights from the region (including my visit with the Ice Road Truckers!).
Upon finishing my 2 day journey returning from Inuvik, I was contacted by the
design team from ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" to help them with
a room they would doing in last week's home remodel, titled "Beauty and the Brain,"
in a location north of Dartmouth, NH. I had a great day on the set. So, more
photos went up on Facebook from that onsite location.
So, you can see it's been an interesting autumn thus far. I am back in New Hampshire
now for a few weeks to watch our fall colors before I head out in late October for
Allegan, Michigan and Toronto, Ontario.
If you are looking for a Layered Curriculum® workshop to be conducted at your
school next year, my Spring / Summer 2010 calendar are now open. You can get
information at: http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm or email me for an electronic
brochure.
As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
