--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TEACHER TIP # 1: Save empty boxes that hold kitchen plastic wrap. The
serrated edge works great if you need a fast way to tear paper.
TEACHER TIP #2: Make "bathroom pass" kits using small tool boxes.
You can have one for boys and one for girls. Include items like folded
paper towels, liquid soap, small paper cups, hygiene products.
The kit functions as the hall pass and encourages hygiene. Have the
student replenish the kits when returned, from the supply cabinet.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From my new page: Research Making News Right Now: available at:
http://help4teachers.com/current_research_news.htm

HOT TOPIC # 1: High-stress events cause negative affect in just
about everyone - sleep deprived or not. But even the smallest-stress
daily events can cause high negative affect in people who have
sleep-deprivation. Small stress events can impact cognitive function,
decision making and learning. Minkel, J. et al (2012 Feb) "Sleep
deprivation and stressors: Evidence for elevated negative affect in
response to mild stressors when sleep deprived." Emotion, nps.

HOT TOPIC #2: Do you know where your children are? Apparently that
is very important for parents of teens Research continues to support the
idea that parent's knowledge of their teen's whereabout and their activities
is the strongest prevention for adolescent substance use and delinquency.
A new study out this month shows that this relationship is even stronger
in adolescents with ADHD. So, despite the difficulty in parenting teens with
ADHD, knowing where they are and what they are doing is your best protection
against risky behavior. Walther, C. et al (2012, Feb 13). "Substance Use and
Delinquency Among Adolescents With Childhood ADHD: The Protective Role
of Parenting. Psychology of Addictive Behaviors, preview, no page specified.

Kathie,
Will you be coming to the Idaho area soon or is there an online course
for Layered Curriculum that I can take? S.C., Pocatello

S.C., Right now, I don't have anything scheduled for Idaho, but things
get added all the time and we are now beginning to put up the fall 2012
schedule. Watch the calendar page for updates. In the meantime, we
do offer a Layered Curriculum® individual study kit which include an A/V
lesson, video and the text and workbook. It is available through the
bookshop at both websites. - Kathie

------SECTION FIVE: WORKSHOPS / SCHEDULE / MISC CHAT------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. I hope you are having a wonderful
week and enjoying the longer days. Apparently we are skipping winter this
year in the northeast, and truthfully, I welcome the break.
I did see a small bit of snow this week while visiting Toronto. We had a
fantastic day at the Ontario Art Gallery with a group of secondary teachers
from the Toronto District School Board. Next week I'll be heading to
Millersburg Ohio for a morning session on the brain with the West Holmes
Local Schools teachers.
New workshops are in the planning for Massachusetts and Florida, so
keep an eye on the calendar for something near you:
http://help4teachers.com/calendar.htm
I still have a few openings on my spring 2012 calendar for workshops and my
fall 2012 calendar is now open. So, if you are looking to host a Layered
Curriculum® workshop, just let me know.
As always, my best to you and yours,
Kathie
