--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: Use dollar-store plastic tablecloths to back bulletin boards.
They are cheap, brightly colored and don't fade. Darlene Rempel,
Medicine Hat Christian School, Brooks, AB..
Teacher Tip # 2: Keep substitute lesson plans per area of study to use in
case of emergency. Keep in a hanging file for convenience.
no name, Highland Middle School, TX.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: A fascinating, yet alarming study on school bullying was
released last month showing us that "witnessing" bullying events is more
damaging that actually being the victim. In a large study of 12-16 year olds,
the researchers found that those who witness bullying events report more
depression, anxiety, hostility and feelings of inferiority than both the victims
and the bullies themselves. Rivers, I. et. al (2009). Observing bullying at
school: The mental health implications of witness status. School Psychology
Quarterly. Vol 24(4), 211-223.

HOT TOPIC #2: Both adolescents and their parents recognize that teen
suicide is a major problem, but most don't acknowledge that it's a problem
in their own community. In a survey carried out by a research group for
pediatricians, adolescents reported that certain behaviors such as drug and
alcohol use would predict teen suicide. Interestingly, the parents reported
that they saw drug and alcohol use as normal adolescent behavior.
The researchers concluded that adolescents and their parents need help
in understanding the true risks and prevalence of teen suicide in their own
community. Schwartz, K. et al. (2010). Attitudes and Beliefs of Adolescent
and Parents Regarding Adolescent Suicide. Pediatrics, Vol.125 (2) pp. 221-227.

------SECTION FOUR: KATHIE'S EMAIL-----
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amy F writes on our FACEBOOK page:
Hi - Thanks for checking on me. Things are going well. The first unit was
pretty overwhelming but it has settled down a lot. The kids are getting a
handle on it although I still have a lot of things to perfect such as balancing
notes and letting students go off on their own. There are three of us doing
this now so we have been good support for each other. The kids for the
most part like it although a few just want me to lecture to them so they
don't have to do any work. All in all, I am glad I switched. I feel much more
in tune with my students, the curriculum and I feel their grades are a
truer reflection of their knowledge.
=============================
Amy - Awesome. So glad you have a couple of buddy teachers to work with.
Makes it so much easier and so much more fun. - Kathie
Welcome February! Isn't this a great month? The days are getting longer,
the January frost is getting thinner.....some days you can almost see Spring
waiting to creep over the horizon. Don't get me wrong - it's still mighty cold
outside and the bees aren't even THINKING about coming out of winter
hibernation....but I so enjoy the longer days.
I'm looking forward to my trip next week to Burley, Idaho to work with the
faculty of Cassia County School District #151. It should be a great day
of differentiating instruction for the K-12 classroom. (I'm also looking forward
to overnighting in Salt Lake City with a good friend and my favorite burrito spot)
I've got new workshops in the making for Illinois, Ontario and Wisconsin.
If you want to join us, check out the details on the calendar page:
http://help4teachers.com/calendar.htm
If you are interested in hosting a workshop at your school, I still have a
workshop date open in May and one in June and the fall calendar has several
openings. visit: http://help4teachers.com/workshops.htm or email me for more
information.
As always, my best to yours,
Kathie
