--------SECTION ONE: TEACHING TIPS ------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teacher Tip # 1: To help combat the "code of silence" with adolescents,
install a small mailbox outside your school psychologist's office marked
"Someone Needs Help". Allow students to drop anonymous notes regarding
problems and issues that may need adult intervention. Help students see the
difference between snitching and seeking help.
Teacher Tip # 2: Keep spare, clean "hoodies" in your elementary classroom
for kids who may have forgotten a coat today.
------SECTION TWO: HOT TOPICS in Neuro & Educational Psychology------
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HOT TOPIC # 1: Pre-K students who have more play time do better in
both academic outcomes and performance throughout their later school
years. Why is play, particularly social pretend play, so important? It helps
to develop "Executive Function" (EF). Current research has found that EF
is more important for school readiness than vocabulary and IQ. In fact,
EF is the most predictive factor of school success. Leading researcher, Adele
Diamond says "Improving EF skills in preschool would actual reduce the
academic disparity seen now between SES classes, by improving both reading
and math." EF skill can be improved in pre-K programs by using social
pretend play to increase a child's ability to inhibit internal and external distractions.
Play and story telling can also be used to develop strong working memory, which
will be used for things that unfold over time, such as reading and mental math.
Working memory and inhibition strategies work together to become
"Executive Function". Dr Adele Diamond, "Strategies and Programs that Help to
Improve Executive Functions in Young Children. APA conference,

It's snowing!! It's only mid-October and it's snowing.....how can this be???
My favorite part of living in New England is that we don't get winter until
the calendar declares winter officially in late December. Mid-October is
supposed to be sunshine, pretty colors, apple picking, honey harvest, etc,
etc. If I wanted to see snow in October, I would have stayed in Utah. Oh
well, here comes winter, ready or not.
I'll be heading out on the road in a week to revisit Allegan, Michigan and
Toronto, Ontario. I always enjoy my visits to both Michigan and Ontario
and am anxious to see what they are doing with Layered Curriculum®.
I've got new workshops in the making for Idaho, Ohio, and Ontario. As soon
as details are worked out, I update my calendar, so check there if you are
trying to find a workshop in your area. http://help4teachers.com/
school next year, I have a couple slots still open on my Spring 2010 calendar
and my Summer and Fall 2010 calendars are now open. You can get

As always, my best to you and yours,
